I read a headline they gave him a 1-day contract so he can play in the final game in Oakland. I didn't click the link - only because it was one of those things crazy enough to be real, but so crazy it could also be satire.
So the A's are 3rd all-time (tied with Boston), but more than half their championships were in Philadelphia. But in the time since moving to Oakland they're actually 2nd, again tied with Boston, with four titles. They've had a lot of success there.
It was a thriving industrial/port city but has declined, and the owner wants big influx of cash from a shrinking tax base.
Right now in Cleveland there's a battle over what to do about either putting a dome on the Browns stadium or an entirely new stadium complex out of downtown, near the airport. Most people here hate the idea of the Browns moving out of downtown but the city is not in a position to spend a billion dollars to put a dome on the current stadium, which is pretty new and a perfectly good facility in a great location, but open-air and so not useful for concerts and stuff about half the year.
The Browns owners aren't threatening to move the team out of the region the way Fisher is doing with the A's but these guys are damn ruthless when it comes to pressuring their communities.
Las Vegas can justify the expense. It's growing and a stadium on the strip will supplement the existing tourist business, etc. Oakland and Cleveland can't justify that money.
but I hate that John Fisher still owns the team. He's going to make tons of money in Vegas but will he actually invest money in them or continue to be a cheap POS and the next Loria?
Who knows the team at #2? (Without looking it up)
Just doesn't seem right.

I do feel bad for Oakland though; the Raiders, the Dubs, & now the A's.
The City did pony up, but asshole Fisher wanted them to pay for the entire thing.
