Cowherd: Giants have components of a Super Bowl team

Sean : 9/27/2024 10:08 am
I just watched this and figured I'd post an alternative view point. I linked the comments which start his game recap:

-Daboll is coaching his ass off with a limited QB. NYG dominated time of possession.
-NYG now has a serviceable OL with a strong left tackle.
-NYG now has a legitimate WR1.
-NYG now has a strong defensive line.

He goes onto say they would be in the Super Bowl bubble if they had Josh Allen. They need more juice in the running game but can get that in the draft. The main point is they need a QB.

His opinion is that ownership influenced the Jones contract and Daboll is managing it the best he can.

Summarizing, with a QB he feels this team has the important pieces of what makes a Super Bowl team.

I'm not saying I agree with this, just a different perspective this morning.

differently if he had a force multiplier like Allen. Personally, I think Daboll has reapplied the training wheels to Jones and is trying to replicate 2022 but with a little more spice with Nabers.

But this is one of the few times Cowherd has something right. On offense, we have a legit WR1, a legit pro bowl LT, and an OL stepping it up in pass protection. And an interesting mix of RB skills.

And on D, we do have two players who are legit disruption factors in Sexy and Burns.

That is a lot of good pieces.

So GM is doing decently?

Let's say that is accurate. Are we really good with decent?

From where we were cap wise and talent wise under DG?

And...comments above seem to indicate a decent QB would make us an above .500 team.

I think the should get Lock a look.

I would if I was the HC.
The team is trash.

We have one of the worst secondary's in the entire league. A DL that it feels like a small miracle when they record a sack.

Last was the first time in 3 YEARS they sacked Dak Prescott. Think about how pathetic that is. WR's that drop easy passes that should be caught. Coaches suck. STs suck.

This team wouldn't be close to a SB with Josh Allen. Sure, they'd be alittle better, but the talent sucks.

There is SOME talent here.

2 questions for you though.

First, Why don't Schoen and Daboll own the fact that there is no QB here? And if you do think they own it, that will go a long way to answering the question you asked.

Second, why are Schoen and Daboll's teams getting worse each season? They went from 9 wins, to 6 wins and I'd say 3 wins seems just about right where they'll be in the end. Why?

They do own the bringing back Jones, i think there is context that needs to be added but they own it and hindsight they shouldnt of done it..

As for last year they lost their Left tackle and then lost thwir best weapon by the 2md game of the season and then Jones got hurt..Daboll was able to win 6 games eith Tyrod Taylor and Tommy freakin devito and in reality should of won 9 games..

We will see what happens this year, i think they end up winning 7 games..

Progrsss isnt linear there are going to be ups and downs especially with a young roster..
*Last NIGHT was the first time they've sacked Dak Prescott in 3 years.

.
The roster needs to get better.
Ash_3 : 9/27/2024 11:25 am : link
But it is appreciably better. We can see it with our own eyes. But this team is genuinely better. The question to ask is why can't they score more? What keeps them from turning those drives into TDs? And why does every drive have to be methodical and require us to hit 7-8 passes in a row. Why do we have such little margin for error?

While any answer is going to be multi causal, some causes matter a lot more than others.
He is spot on

A top half of the league QB wins this game going away last night.
This is not some groundbreaking insight

There are a lot of teams that can say “if we had Josh Allen we’d be a real contender.”

Just finding a legit franchise QB, much less a top 3 player at the position, is the dream of every GM and is one of the hardest things to do in pro sports. 16 of the last 21 Super Bowls have been won by either Brady, Manning, Manning, Roethlisberger, or Mahomes. If you have “one of those guys” you’re gonna be in contention every year. Finding that guy is insanely rare and difficult to do…

But the fact is the Giants have had 6 top 7 picks since 2018 and the only QB we have to show for it is Daniel Jones who was not even considered by most to be worthy of a top 15 pick even at the time we drafted him. It is absolutely insane to go that long post Manning’s prime (which ended 10 years ago) with that many opportunities to draft high and NOT end up even taking a CHANCE on a QB who was a projected top 10 talent.

Winning 7 games this year is overly optomistic.
Cowherd likes to zig when everyone else is zagging.

He's looking for clicks. Nothing wrong with that, but other than Nabers, Dex and AT, I don't see a ton of SB talent.
I used to think we had decent talent
Matt M. : 9/27/2024 1:05 pm : link
If Cowherd is saying the same, now I have to doubt my assessment.
Defense needs a DL
CasualFan : 9/27/2024 1:15 pm : link
And a #1 corner. More depth. Offense needs a TE and 2 WRs.

Everybody's guess on the QB.

Are still a few drafts away from being a playoff contender.

We have a ton of holes

Franchise QB
Bell Cow RB
No. 2 Receiver
No. 1 CB
2 Starting Caliber DT

We need 2 or 3 strong drafts and who knows what we’ll need then.
Allen /Mahomes is a red herring
Jerry in_DC : 9/27/2024 1:20 pm : link
Of course we would be great with those guys. But they are very rare commodities.

The way to think about it is where would we be with a good QB. Getting a good QB is possible. YMMV on who is "good" vs elite vs not good. But I'd think someone on a Stafford or Herbert level.

I think that this is a good team with a Stafford or Herbert. A QB that level last night with all day to throw to these receivers? I think that team is putting up a lot of points.
I agree that an elite QB makes this a playoff team
mfsd : 9/27/2024 1:32 pm : link
but you could say the same of about 10 teams in the league. There’s a lot of parity, very few have been good enough to win consistently without a Josh Allen/Patrick Mahomes type guy.

San Francisco is the only one that’s clearly a playoff team even without an elite QB.

There are a handful of solid vet QBs that can push a 7 win team to 10 win playoff team level. But I don’t think we want the Giants grasping for that, we want a perennial Super Bowl contender.
He's totally right!

So you want the coach and GM to publicly state the QB sucks? Are you serious?
