Our record each October 1st the past 10 seasons-

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 9/27/2024 7:11 pm
'15: 1-2.
'16: 2-1.
'17: 0-4, fell to 0-4 on 10/1.
'18: 1-3.
'19: 2-2.
'20: 0-3.
'21: 0-3.
'22: 2-1.
'23: 1-2.
'24: 1-3.

That comes out to 10-24, a winning percentage of just under .30%.

The late Wellington Mara used to call a successful season one that had 'meaningful December games'. I found that to be pretty lame, but since '13...we aren't even getting meaningful Columbus Day games. But hey, we're trying, practicing hard, & we only lost to Dallas by 5 points @ home, instead of 40!

I didn't experience '64-'81, but man.....this stretch of Giants football has been so incredibly bleak & deflating as a fan. I used to plan my weekends around the Giants & now...whatever. I'll watch them @ the bar, but completely apathetic & blase about it all. And this is coming from a man who walked around San Francisco for hours aimlessly on 1/5/03 & broke a remote in anger in that second Giants-Eagles game in '10. That fan has been beaten into submission.

Sorry for the rant, but god damn...this team is so depressing to follow. I have no confidence in Mara-who strikes me as an incompetent boob when it comes to football-to turn it around. I don't know...perhaps 'The Nephew' proves me wrong & turns the ship around when he's running the show.
It’s a rant

Not sure what the response to this is, but I get it. Not a bad rant at all.

2010 eagles. Worst game I’ve be ever witnessed. Started a family 3 years ago, this team…game…I no longer am mad more than 2 hours after the game. It used to ruin my week. I guess I’m grateful for leaning to not be bothered so much by it.

Sucks, wish the team was on a better track. They’re on a better one than 2015, IMO. Roster is better. I’m not sure whether Daboll is bad, or Daboll is in Garrett mode because of DJ. Frustrating. There’s a lot of good talent in this team. Coach seems to have given up.
I guess we'd qualify as

What's so disappointing
Adam G in Big D : 9/27/2024 8:35 pm : link
is that Mara was around for the Super Bowl years and yet is unable to apply anything from what he learned from those teams to building the current team.

ya can't fix stupid
Let's expand it
Sean : 9/27/2024 8:52 pm : link
Here are the starts since 2013:

2013: 0-6
2014: 3-7; 3-9
2015: 0-2 (actually hovered around .500 until December)
2016: playoffs
2017: 2-8; 2-13
2018: 1-7
2019: 2-8; 2-11
2020: 0-5: 1-7
2021: 2-6
2022: playoffs
2023: 2-8
2024: 1-3

Incredibly bad. They had two playoff years in 2016 & 2022 where they actually started fast. 2015 was the rare season they hung around before fading late. Everything else was over by October.
Look at the bright side

At least we won some games at the end of those seasons to build momentum and instill a winning culture

And uncover the hidden talents of Jerrel Jernigan.
We are very much the new Knicks
Mike from SI : 9/27/2024 9:11 pm : link
right down to cycling through coaches and GMs who suck, importing and paying over-the-hill veterans, getting hyped up over mere competence from young players, overvaluing shitty young players, etcetera etcetera. But we haven't even gotten a fun mini Carmelo era.

The Knicks finally turned things around after Dolan pulled back, and allowed his competent front office to finally, finally find a point guard. But the Maras are entrenched in this front office and obviously we have no QB. Even if we hit on a QB pick this Spring, we would be 2 years away from competing because almost no rookie QB comes in and dominates. (Sadly, by then, Dex and Thomas may be on the downswing.)

I've been blessed in my life to attend great institutions, work for great companies, etc., and many of the nepotism people I've run into have, themselves, been impressive and would have been successful regardless of their last names. But not all of them. While John Mara seems like a nice guy, he very well may just be a mediocre dude who inherited this situation and didn't do anything overt to fuck it up.

The absolute best thing that could happen to the New York Football Giants is the Maras selling their ownership stake. Second best thing would be finding a legitimate franchise quarterback. I guess (2) is more likely because we could just luck into it (like the Colts/Packers did twice), but this is all very depressing.
They don't even need to sell
Jerry in_DC : 9/27/2024 9:28 pm : link
They can just hire a President to run the day to day operations who isn't a Mara. There is no rule that someone from ownership needs to be lurking in the halls, popping in on football meetings, roaming the practice fields.

There are plenty of owners who have real business interests, many of which they built/ran themselves. These guys aren't in the football offices everyday.

But realistically, in this particular situation, would they let that person fire Tim McDonnell? (No, they would not. Or at least that's my opinion on the situation.)
You’re right on.

The Giants are losing fans, and the fans that are left couldn’t give 2 shits anymore.

Now,after a decade of bullshit they’re losing an ENTIRE GENERATION of new fans.

My kids are teenagers and they think I’m a moron for following this joke of a franchise. The Giants have sucked ass their entire lives. My dream was to take them to games in their youth and have it be special. But now they’d do anything to not have to be dragged to a game. They went twice and hated it. So I walked away from my PSL this year. Wasn’t worth jack shit.
This is my feeling as well.

Part of this may just be getting older, but the deep emotional commitment is gone, for better or worse. I will never enjoy a win the way I did in 1986 or 2007.

But I do think too much gets ascribed to skill and not enough to luck. The Giants have made mistakes and been unlucky when they lose. They have made good decisions and been lucky when they win. Parsing them can be difficult. Good luck - LT could have gone to NO. Asante Samuel could make that pick. Scott Norwood could hit a 45 yarder.
Bad luck - among worst in injuries in last 15 years. DJ could have been next Eli. Any number of bizarre losses to the Eagles. Think of it this way, would Belichick have been the GOAT if they hadnt gotten lucky in taking Brady in
the 6th round?

In the end you have to try and judge process as best as you can, and not results. Despite the depressing outcomes, I have always felt that the NY Giants process has been pretty good - they are willing to spend money, analyze their own situation, make changes, etc. It is possible that Mara has too much influence (this is almost by definition bad process) and many here think so. They mouth the right words. I don't know if their actions match their words.

One of my clients, who was CEO of a Fortune 100 company was talking about what it took to be successful, and mouthed these brilliant words - "be in the right place at the right time and don't fuck it up". Maybe they fucked it up. Maybe they weren't in the right place or the right time. Hard to know.

Not only that - even being blind to the actual stadium experience and things outside of the actual team. Its almost like he does the opposite of what he truly wants/believes

I, myself, wonder how much he's internalized that the average fan hates MetLife and thinks they totally fucked it up.

I still get somewhat upset during the games, but I don’t let it ruin my week or even the rest of the day.

Yup. I raised 3 kids to be Giants fans, and during that stretch (say '86 through '08) it was a pretty easy sell. They still are Giants fans but don't at all plan around watching the games, since the Giants have sucked so much for so long, and I'm pretty sure none of our 6 grandkids even know who the Giants are.
