Will the Vikings keep Darnold?

eric2425ny : 9/29/2024 2:21 pm
If they go with McCarthy I would be very interested in Darnold.
This is an interesting question...
bw in dc : 9/29/2024 2:29 pm : link
At the end of the day, they drafted McCarthy to be the franchise guy. And he's on the coveted rookie contract.

As great as Darnold has been, it's just too early to consider this. If I were in charge, I would need to see his full year of work first...

Franchise Darnold and work out a trade.
I doubt it
Mike from Ohio : 9/29/2024 2:29 pm : link
They didn’t draft McCarthy to sit him on the bench, and I think Darnold will be looking for an opportunity to be a longer term starter than one more year in Minnesota.

The only way the Giants make sense is if they can’t draft a rookie high, but Darnold will have to make a decision on where he is going before that is known. I don’t think he is an option for the Giants.
I remember being mocked for comp of Jones to Darnold
HardTruth : 9/29/2024 2:36 pm : link
Yet its very early

Sam Darnold opened in Carolina 3-1 with 1200
Pass yards and 10 total TDs with just 3 ints

Its a long year, lets see where this goes

Plus McCarthy is out for an entire season and will need to return from the knee injury for basically his rookie season. He can sit for an entire season if not more if necessary
No they drafted their QB
UberAlias : 9/29/2024 2:54 pm : link
But we need to pursue him.
Darnold is a free agent
arniefez : 9/29/2024 2:57 pm : link
when this season ends. Unless the Vikings sign him before free agency starts he's free to sign with any team.
I wanted Darnold or Allen in that draft
UberAlias : 9/29/2024 3:08 pm : link
I always felt like the Jets might have ruined him but didn't see enough of him at the time to be confident that was the case. The way he's playing now seems more like what I had suspected.

If we can get our QB without draft picks, I think we could get good quickly. A CB, DT, IOL in some order with our first three pick could go a long way.

long way to go but if he keeps playing this well probably
Eric on Li : 9/29/2024 3:35 pm : link
the contract will be very interesting.
The Giants will offer
Giantsfan79 : 9/29/2024 3:46 pm : link
4/200
Wouldn’t be the first time the Giants picked up a Jet
Simms11 : 9/29/2024 4:00 pm : link
reject to have that guy perform well for us. It seems Darnold has come into his own and his experience and skill is now taking shape. Might be worth a gamble. He’s going to be better than any drafted QB in 2025.
Everything should be on the table now
56goat : 9/29/2024 4:13 pm : link
except keeping Danny Dink 'n Dunk.
I would take Darnold in a heartbeat.
Rjanyg : 9/29/2024 4:15 pm : link
In fact I was hoping they would have signed him over Lock.
His struggles in Carolina
Toth029 : 9/29/2024 4:35 pm : link
Come to mind but so did Baker and they had to deal with the awful Ben McAdoo.

Baker rebounded in Los Angeles and gambled on himself and earned a nice pay day in Tampa Bay.

Curious to see what transpires but giving an outright big contract is risky. And it might allow Minnesota to deal McCarthy, possibly.
So many here bitch about DJ and six years....
MOOPS : 9/29/2024 4:36 pm : link
when Darnold makes it obvious that seven years is the magic number for a QB to come into his own.
Darnold
JoeyBigBlue : 9/29/2024 5:35 pm : link
Signed for 1 year 10 million with the Vikings. The Giants could of done that with over paying Lock 5 million. But I’m pretty sure Darnold would of pick a Minnesota with better weapons than coming here.
Would you give Darnold a 2 year, $95M contract?

This is an excellent point.

And why Jones should absolutely be back in 2025.

You're probably just mocked because you post your opinions as definitive facts. You even named yourself, in part, truth. That's pretty pompous and obnoxious. It's like all those construction or plumbing companies or whatever naming themselves "patriot plumbing" or "freedom finance". That works on some people I'd suppose but otherwise you typically should be wary of people or companies going out of their way to declare they are patriots or whatever. In the same way, hard truth is a bit too on the nose. It's possible your every prediction or opinion isn't a truth right? Get over yourself
It’s too early to consider his future with MIN
Dave in PA : 9/29/2024 6:01 pm : link
This is Sam Darnold after all. He is capable of being awful for a month or two straight and coming back down to earth.
This is a very unusual situation
Jay on the Island : 9/29/2024 6:25 pm : link
I was livid in 2018 when the Giants took Barkley over Darnold especially after seeing the Giants gift wrap him to the Jets. Darnold looked very good during his rookie season with a weak supporting cast. The Jets being the Jets failed to give him a good OL or weapons and basically ruined him. He bounced around to Carolina and SF and now he looks like the QB he was supposed to become.

If the Giants do not have a top 3-5 pick or don't love any of the QB's in the draft then I hope that they sign Darnold assuming he hits the FA market and he keeps playing this well.
Hats off to Darnold and Baker Mayfield

turning their careers around in their late 20's.
Don't worry
kelly : 9/29/2024 8:26 pm : link
whatever the decision the team makes it will be the wrong one.

That is how we got here.

Darnold has started 4 fewer games than Daniel Jones in his career, not counting playoffs...which would make it 6 more starts for Jones over Darnold.

Mayfield was always pretty good, not great, but good. Cleveland got a bit greedy.
Darnold was always pretty bad, give or take a few games.
Shows what the right coach / system will do for a QB
DaveW2 : 9/30/2024 12:12 pm : link
Sam's and Baker's current situations are probably way better than their previous ones. It's possible that DJ would also do better in a better situation.

I think that Daboll has a lot to do with DJ's struggles. Imagine what a confidence killer, having your boss bearing down on you, saying "you better not screw up / throw an interception".
Let's see how he does the rest of the season goes
HomerJones45 : 9/30/2024 12:41 pm : link
there is talent there, but let's give the DC's a chance to study film.
I think the actual question will be will Darnold want to stay there
PatersonPlank : 9/30/2024 12:45 pm : link
He knows JJM is the future, and he is likely looking at this as a 1 season tryout for the other 31 teams. My bet is he'd like to go sign somewhere as the starter.
