NFT: My son is on the USS George Washington

jvm52106 : 10/2/2024 4:31 am
Heading back to Japan. Hoping for safe travels and for the temperature of the Middle East to cool some as well as other areas around the globe.
Good luck JVM

depart Norfolk (I can the piers from my condo) for parts unknown last week. It's a stark reminder that we send service members into dangerous situations every day. I had more than a few of those days myself in the Persian Gulf and Iraq. May your son and all his shipmates return home safely. God bless.
Prayers

for safety for your son jvm, and let him know a lot of anonymous Americans are grateful for his service.

If he will be deployed during the holidays and you have ways to send him anything please share if you don't mind (or contact me offline pjcas18 @ gmail and I can make a recommendation).

We used to annually participate in Adopt-a-solider for Christmas every year but they have made it harder and harder to do things like that (understandably) but it's a hard enough job in "normal" times it has got to be a harder for those away from their families during the holidays and my family would like to show our gratitude if possible.
Fingers crossed

He gets to stay in Japan vs getting sent to the middle east. I'm not sure how much time he'd get to "explore" Japan, but it's a beautiful country rich in culture, not a bad place to be stationed.
I pray your son stays safe, John

and for a less embattled planet all around. Just read a report (on reactions in energy market to the heightened risk in ME) that US has 3000 troops in Iraq and Syria. Now that I did not know--how could they be stationed in those zones unless it's in Kurdish areas bordering Turkey (which might make sense)?
I can't really see Hezbollah or Iran taking out

He's in about the safest place if that thing ends up in the Middle East.

Hopefully the world climate will calm down and he gets to enjoy his time in Yokosuka. I was stationed on two previous 9-1-1 carriers (Indy and Kitty) there and probably the most rewarding duty stations for me.

Shout out to HST mentioned on thread too! I was stationed there as well.

And thank you for his and their service.

Japan holds a warm spot in my heart as I once lived there.
My best to your family

and a big thank you to your son. I served in the Marines and uncertain times can raise concerns of family members. Wish you well keeping everybody positive. We have a great Navy (and greater sailors) and that ship will be ready for any challenge it may meet.

Interesting that Eric and you both have sons who are serving.
Best wishes to your son

But it's not the middle east we should be concerned with.

The Chinese are the ones to worry about.

For the last six months I've been wargaming a South China Seas conflict between US carriers and the Chinese around the first island chain. It's not pretty. Most civilians believe that US task forces are invulnerable.

They are not.

That being said, I'm certain that the US naval commanders are more than competent and know how to keep our massive cities on the water a safe distance from the Chinese mainland.

Hammer, I forget where I read it, but there was an article this past spring that said US intelligence was predicting China would invade Taiwan by 2027.
I'll say this as a Fifth Fleet Navy Vet

I've read that China has set a ready date sometime in 2027. So, yeah, you're right.

I'm pretty sure the thinking is that it'll be a blockade rather than an outright invasion.

Things may change in the meantime, but considering how China is acting towards Philippines assets, I fully expect things to heat up in the South China Seas.

Being a part of the only FDNF carrier should be a great time for your son. All of my buddies who were a part of CAG-5 vastly enjoyed their experience.

MikeyPGiants has a son stationed in Japan and he seems to love it. I'm sure it's not easy being that far away from the boy though
