NFT: ⚾Mets vs. Phillies NLDS thread⚾ Game 1 – 4:08 pm EDT start ⚾

Optimus-NY : 10/5/2024 1:05 pm
Welcome to this best-of-five National League Division Series thread between the 6th seeded Mets (89-73) & the 2nd seeded N.L. East Champion Phillies (95-67). The Mets beat the Brewers by the hairs on their chinny-chin-chins in the NLWS two days ago despite losing the season series to them during the regular season. The Phillies, like the Brewers, won the regular season series against the Mets 7 games to 6. The Mets will be looking for some payback against the Phillies the same way they did against the Brewers. Click HERE to read a preview of this Playoff Series. Enjoy 😊!

I think Diaz is most effective with consecutive appearances. He loses it a little after time off therefore he needs a 6-10 pitches to find it.

As soon as he got wired up and started hitting the zone with the fast ball his slider came naturally.

Diaz needs to be used as much as possible.

We are so close.

Lets fucking go Mets

Yo brother....we were all wrong back at 0-5 and 11 games under in May!

My sons continually give me crap for my treatment of Francisco Lindor....I was killing him at the start of the season while others were citing his annual poor/slow starts.

I was wrong, wrong, wrong...and it's never felt so good!

I even cancelled my 20 game tix for this year, though there were other logistical reasons beside my lack of faith in the team DS had put together. I'm back in for 2025, BTW, same seats as I had previously.

Still work to do but this team just has that feel to it. I’m dreaming big right now. We all should be.

Francisco Lindor is everything we thought he was when we made the move for him and more.

How about Steve Cohen? Brings in Stearns who brings in Mendoza and here we are.

No matter what happens over the next month, we are in great hands.
Wow! Just wow!

Up and thinking how crazy it is the Mets are in the NLCS this year. I had faith that we finally had all the right people in charge but this is still a great surprise. When you think about it though we had the great team in 22 so we did have a core in place that we're knew could produce results but obviously Stearns knew how to round it out a ton better than inepptler.

Also our change to series threads was the real catalyst to the Mets turn around lol!!

Piazza, Beltran, as great as they were, I think mentally for me will always be just a little behind a homegrown player like Strawberry or Wright. If they (Piazza or Beltran) had won a WS it may be different.

Piazza's HR after 9-11 is one of the best moments in any sport at any time for me outside of Miracle on Ice (but I was little for Miracle on Ice).

Wright is a lot like Lindor to me, and hearing them say last night that Lindor needs to stretch/prep for 40 minutes before every game just to take the field made me very worried for his future. I know they say it's back spasms right now, but I also know it didn't start with spinal stenosis for Wright. Reyes is always going to be tainted for now because he's a piece of shit. I do profess to separate on-field and off-field and I do, if Reyes could perform and he was legally allowed to I'd welcome him on my team, but doesn't mean he gets a spot in my pantheon of players.

Anyway, I'm just enjoying this ride. I was very critical of the start to the season, but I was one of the few of us who did actually bet the over on the win total, lol and a WS win definitely can change how I think of a player and where they go on my personal Mets Mt. Rushmore.

good topic though.

2024 MLB Postseason Snapshot and Schedule as of now - ( New Window )
Just to put perspective
pjcas18 : 10/10/2024 9:30 am : link
on just how bad the Mets first two months were.

I saw a stat last night from June 1 to the end of the season the Mets were the best team in baseball. Over the final 4 months of a 6 month season they were #1. They still needed to win a game on the last day of the season just to qualify for the wild card.

The Mets were at 24-33 .421 on May 31st. Closer to last place in the NL than to the last wild card spot. 4.5 games out of a WC spot with 8 teams to pass to make it.

Let hope they keep it going and make this season into a Disney movie.

I will say this, the Stanek/Garret we are seeing now were not the players we saw 4 weeks ago. However I stand by my statement before...

Garret was overworked and needed a rest from high leverage and Stanek was working on pitches like a slider/sweeper so he seemed less effective.

But now it's time to do what you do best and he's throwing HEAT and Garret is back to using his nasty curve.

I think this is a strategy Hefner has had all season which makes sense for development purposes ..... but now we are here and everyone is using their A+ stuff and look a lot better. Same with the SP's
I mentioned this before
pjcas18 : 10/10/2024 10:09 am : link
the thing about Stanek and Maton to a lesser extent is both have pitched in the post-season and the World Series.

Stanek has a ring. I don't think that experience can be over-stated. We have seen players wilt with jitters under the intense playoff spotlight so many times. Having someone reliable is invaluable.

the unsung hero of the Mets has been Jose Quintana. Almost zero mention despite making 31 starts + 2 playoff starts 11 innings 1 er 11 k's. His career playoff era now stands at 2.43 (7 games, 6 starts)
Wright is tough to quantify
Eric on Li : 10/10/2024 10:19 am : link
by the numbers he's the best met position player because he did more as a met than strawberry, piazza, beltran, lindor (so far) being homegrown. had he not gotten injured or had he led them to closing the deal in 2015, i think he's got a pretty ironclad argument. obviously he had the extreme misfortune of the wilponzis slash/burn.

that said i dont think any of them ever hit the highs that piazza hit as a true MVP candidate who carried them on a multi-season postseason run that got to a WS (and 100% yes 9/11 homer too was just as big). until lindor this last week.

2 more prime years and lindor is 2nd on the mets all time war list to wright but in 600+ fewer games as a met, and with a somewhat reasonable chance to catch him.

100%. marte has contributed too, and obviously acuna was big when lindor was out. some good eppler fingerprints on this run that can blunt the sting of 2023's failures. i think he was even the one that found garrett right?

Garrett predates Stearns, just as Elian Pena (2025) if he becomes a star will be an "Eppler" addition... Mets were in on Pena pre-Eppler but without getting complicated, an Eppler addition.

Eppler seemingly was an excellent recruiter. So much so i wonder if the Mets would have gotten at least a cursory look from Ohtani last offseason and maybe even a better shot at Yamamoto.

Obviously doesn't matter given where we've ended up, though that possibly decides the next series one way or the other lol.

Tough call....I think the Padres are deeper all the way around, line-up 1-9, starting pitching, BP, etc.

I also think they lead the league in unlikeable characters, though J. Winker helps the Mets in that category.

But, the Dodgers have Ohtani and Betts and a hobbled Freeman.

Their pitching staff is a mess, but a two days off will help them...glad LA won last night which means a game 5 Friday, two days before the NLCS begins

Tough call, but I think I'd rather face Los Angeles.

The Padres scare me; Darvish (who owns the Mets) Cease, King plus Tatis, Machado, etc...

What should be apparent by now, is that the WC bias by Japanese players is very hard to overcome (Murakami has publicly said he intends to sign with a west coast team or... the Yankees). Obviously, there are some outliers but it's very much real. That being said, when it comes to FA, some are simply better "recruiters" than others and Eppler seemed to be good at that part of the job.

I do think the Mets bring in a GM this off-season (that's not to say Stearns is or isn't a good recruiter, hard to even tell at this point, as the Brewers didn't spend on FA's and the Mets didn't chase big FA this off-season)

i get sending him to AFL to play on Friday but having him play b2b on saturday too seems a little unnecessary unless they arent going to start him on sunday.

iglesias has struggled and had some really bad at bats yesterday. mcneil starting against righties could be a big add. Yu and 1 of Flaherty/Yamamoto are likely starting for SD/LA on Friday.

probably lines up king for game 1 if Padres advance.
or the other of Flaherty/Yamamoto for LAD if they advance.

lifetime mcneil is:
3/6 vs king
1/3 vs flaherty
0/3 vs yamamoto

iglesias 0/5 vs flaherty, 1/4 vs king, hasnt faced yamamoto.

iglesias hit .402 with a 184 rc vs lefties on the year. .301 with a 112 rc vs righties. for his career he's an 83 rc vs righties, 110 vs lefties. he's had a magical season but may be best served platooned vs lefties.
It's fine to play him B2B IMO
Metnut : 10/10/2024 10:47 am : link
He needs the extra ABs more than he needs rest. He hasn't played in over a month. During the regular season, these guys often play 10+ days in a row, so I'm not worried about fatigue. Want to get him into game shape. The flight from AZ to LAD or SD isn't that bad either.

I agree that having him as an option vs RHP could be a really big help. Not sure Mendoza will sit Iglesias though.
