NFT: ⚾Mets vs. Phillies NLDS thread⚾ Game 1 – 4:08 pm EDT start ⚾

Optimus-NY : 10/5/2024 1:05 pm
Welcome to this best-of-five National League Division Series thread between the 6th seeded Mets (89-73) & the 2nd seeded N.L. East Champion Phillies (95-67). The Mets beat the Brewers by the hairs on their chinny-chin-chins in the NLWS two days ago despite losing the season series to them during the regular season. The Phillies, like the Brewers, won the regular season series against the Mets 7 games to 6. The Mets will be looking for some payback against the Phillies the same way they did against the Brewers. Click HERE to read a preview of this Playoff Series. Enjoy 😊!

think people (not you guys) forget how good McNeil was down the stretch. From 7/1 on he was top 3 on the team in almost every offensive category and 1.5 fWAR over 55 games.
I was saying last night

when JD was up that maybe McNeil takes that spot next time, especially coming off the injury.

Only Lindor had a higher OPS, he was 3rd on the team in OBP, 3rd in average, 2nd in slugging, 2nd in wRC+, 3rd best k%, 2nd in ISO

Thing I liked was adding Acuna late for D but McNeil isn't chopped liver either.
Why
DanMetroMan : 10/10/2024 11:17 am : link
is Danny Young even on the team? If it's a blow out he's not even the type of arm who can give you a bunch of innings. Might as well swap him with Kranick at that point, or even Lucchesi.

From last Monday against the Braves through last night, this was the
KayvonOjulari515 : 10/10/2024 11:22 am : link
best 10 days that I've ever had as a Mets fan.

I wrote this team off in May.

I wrote this team off after losing two of three to the Athletics at home in August.

I thought it was over in August after losing on a Sunday to San Diego and Diaz blowing a save against the Diamondbacks.

I thought it was over after losing the first two games to the Brewers in the regular season series.

I thought it was over after Butto let off those two home runs in Game 3 of the Wildcare series.

I'm blown away by the resiliency and toughness of this team. LGM!

Leftie bullpen insurance in case Peterson falters? Thankfully Peterson has been so incredible we haven't needed him.

If Peterson falters in-game that badly then you're probably not going to bring in your last reliever, and if you are it's likely in a mop up role (which he's not capable of). He hasn't pitched in over 2 weeks.
i think young for PHI made sense if lefties were up in 4th/5th
Eric on Li : 10/10/2024 11:53 am : link
and you had a starter leave early and needed innings with peterson unavailable.

he could make sense for same reason vs LAD with ohtani/freeman/muncy.

vs SD i dont see much point. you'd rather have a lefty for Merill but that's pretty much it.

neither otto / young have been needed much so with more rest i could see an argument for keeping acuna and dropping 1 of them.

they should have pinch run for JDM yesterday when he was the tying run, i think the only reason they didnt was bc it was 6th inning and they didnt want to lose his bat, but if you have mcneil and an extra bat you are able to do that. would have at least still had iglesias or mcneil on the bench.

i think id rather have the extra pinch runner than an extra pitcher who is only pitching in a blowout anyway.

Brewers general manager Matt Arnold held a press conference today on the heels of the club being eliminated from the playoffs last week. Arguably the most notable thing he said was in relation to closer Devin Williams. “We have to stay open-minded,” Arnold said, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com on X. “We’re the smallest market in the league, so that’s something that’s required in this.”

probably should trade Williams. They know how to build a bullpen (again, I think Means could be a very good closer, Ashby looked good out of the pen etc) and 1 year 10.5 million, Williams will have plenty of interest. "Most" teams can afford him. I could see both the Phillies and Braves interested. Though, I fully expect the Braves to make their usual lopsided trade with the A's... Mason Miller.

They should definitely trade Williams. You think they'd get more in the offseason or at the deadline? You'd expect more in the offseason (acquiring team gets him for full season) but RP market at the deadline can heat up, especially for an elite arm, and they'd even get to use him for MIL's first 80+ games which would help them get back to the playoffs.

Full-season AND the ability to offer him a QO. Arnold was also there when they traded Hader in season and it crushed morale (even Stearns touched on this). I expect Williams to be traded and for a nice return.

I love this because I was listening to MLB network on Sirius this morning and Steve Philips was saying how many owners resent having to pay those big contracts. It's great to have an owner that's not in that category.

According to Forbes, Cohen's net worth has increased from about $14B to almost $20B since he bought the team. Whatever you think of him and his methods, the dude has the Midas touch.

It's because he actually gives a shit.

Lots of owners say they want to win, but only at their price. You look at the things he's done, even besides the contracts:

Citi Field finally has an identity. They are reaching out to the fans and making it a mets home field, not just a billboard for corporate sponsors.

Agreed and adding a couple of thoughts. I was actually getting a little nervous early this season that Cohen may get frustrated and take his profit and sell this team. This run has allayed those fears, which were completely my own 50 years as a Met fan paranoia. He seems to be enjoying this as much as we are.

Second thought is that while every MLB owner is very, very rich, many have much of their net worth tied up in the ballclub. Similar to the Duttons of Yellowstone - land rich and cash poor. They then rely on the ballclub profits to fund their lifestyle. Cohen doesn't have that problem at all obviously. Much to the Mets and our benefit as fans.

I hate the strikezone box they display on TV. I don’t think it’s very “official” and only serves to piss people off. I much rather the days when the strikezone box wasn’t there.

I also loathe HP umpires that have “their own” strikezone. It should be uniform. And with the technology we have today, I’m floored that we don’t have a reliable electronic strikezone.

You can do it horizontally (although the current technology has an MOE of 1"). The real problem is vertically because hitters do not have the same exact stance from pitch to pitch. You can program in the averages of the last X number of pitches faced to get an estimate of the top and bottom of the zone, but there is no guarantee that on any given pitch that that will be the exact boundaries of the strike zone.

It surprises me too because you would think Peterson would follow Senga in any game that Senga starts, and Peterson would be pitching on three days' rest if he goes in Game 1. If it were me, I'd start Manaea in Game 1 and go Senga in Game 2 to give Peterson the extra day of rest so he can pitch into the later innings if necessary.

Game 1 would be one day shorter rest than usual not 2. Game 2 would put Peterson on regular rest.
I would do the following with the SPs:

HOME Game 3 - Manaea

AWAY Game 7 - Manaea

think the primary motivations were preferences for games 5(senga)/6(severino)/7(manaea) and getting Peterson back available in the pen asap. by game 3 DP will be on 3 days rest, game 4 he'll be on 4 days rest. they will have megill as an alternative piggy back option off senga for game 5, and with being able to pitch more they wont need as much length from a piggy-backer, so by at least game 3 the BP is stronger by having DP likely available.

fringe benefit is more games for senga stretches him out quicker if the series doesnt go full distance. probably 40-60 pitches game 1, 70-80 in game 5. closer to normal if they advance.
