NOW is the time for the Giants to start experimenting

M.S. : 10/14/2024 10:24 am

and I cannot think of a better place to start than at Right Guard. At 34 years of age, Greg Van Roten is not the long-term answer. He's not even an intermediate-term answer. Unless Evan Neal is still hobbled, the Giants should feed him into that position.

I would also spell Dexter more often. We all want him to still be around when the Giants finally figure out which future QB can lead this team, and that will take some time. I wouldn't put anymore wear & tear on the Dexter tread than need be.

I would also keeping feeding in Darius Muasau inside, and if he takes snaps away from Micah McFadden, who gives a shit? I want to see for real what this guy brings to the team.

In the meantime, with Thibs out, the Azeez Ojulari experiment will be on-going. So far, the preliminary results look promising!

As an aside, what was #31 Tyler Nubin doing on Joe Burrow's near 50-yard stroll in the park for a touchdown? The Giants defensive LOS was already over-loaded to the right when a gaping hole very quickly opens up to the left. Our rookie Safety was 10 yards off the LOS and he comes rushing forward to cover a TE who is curling out to the exact opposite side from which Joe Burrow starts his run. Open your eyes young man!!! Look around. I don't care if you were on the other side of the field. You were literally running in the opposite direction of where the QB was headed.
For better or worse

Evan Neal
arniefez : 10/14/2024 10:29 am : link
should be, but he probably won't be, the starting LT next week since it's unlikely Andrew Thomas will play. It will probably be Josh Ezeudu. That worked out well the last time for Daniel Jones. Hopefully he can pass a physical on March 12, 2025.
Got to be realistic about Neal
BillT : 10/14/2024 10:38 am : link
He missed all of the offseason and half of training camp. I’d love to see him at RG but there is no way he’s has the snaps it would take to get him ready to do that. He’s taking his snaps at T as he’s the backup there. Kubas or Stinnie might be a better choice
Evan Neal is probably the LT this Sunday.
FStubbs : 10/14/2024 10:41 am : link
It will be interesting. Very, very small chance that maybe his problems were that he needs to be on the left side?

Who knows at this point.
This team is not experimenting

until they're out of playoff contention, if then. Azeez is not an experiment, he's next man up. Personally, I'd like to see if TDV has a future at QB, but that's not gonna happen anytime soon. If they bench DJ, Lock likely gets the nod. Kubas might get a look at guard, Neal ain't gonna happen.

I don't know about that. They don't even play him in jumbo sets, something weird going on there.
We are still in the hunt.

Unlikely, IMO, to make the playoffs, but still a reasonable shot.

The OL has stabilized somewhat. DJ finally has a little time to look for receivers rather than incoming rushers.

Too early for the 'fuck it, let's experiment' phase of the season. And by the time we get there, we'll be in 'I'm coaching for my life, I can't experiment' phase.

Eagles is a must win for us to have a remote shot at the wildcard

Hey! Open your eyes. It's over.
let's give Neal some baby steps
Giantsfan79 : 10/14/2024 10:50 am : link
and put him in as the blocking TE instead of Ezeudu in the jumbo packages. If he can't even get on the field when they send extra blockers in to run the ball, why do we he can be a starter?

Bill, we're heading in to week 7 of the regular season. He's been practicing, he should be as ready as anyone by this point.

Much more likely the bulk of his struggles were at least in part caused by playing on a broken foot and other injuries he's had, I believe a back injury in 2022, IIRC.
A culture of experimentation starts at the top

When your owner/CEO leaves a trail of dead coaching bodies and places massive value on meaningless wins, you are getting the opposite of experimentation. You are getting a coach who treats late season games against the Panthers and Colts as the biggest games of his life.

If you told me the Giants will provide optimal pass protection from here on in, and they consistently opened holes for our RBs, then, sure, the Giants will be in the hunt. But that’s not going to happen on a consistent basis. And then you know what happens next? Everything will not be perfect for Daniel Jones and his game will get very small. Just like last night. And then just like that there is no playoff hunt.
If Thomas doesn't play

its "likely", Eleumonor goes to LT and Neal plays RT. Neal is NOT going from not playing a single snap to protecting the blind side. Get real guys!

For a top draft pick, yep. For the playoffs, how do you think a matchup with someone like Detroit would go? I'd rather not be embarrased like we were in 2022.

Ezeudu's the swing T.

They need to try Neal at G. Saying he can't do it is bullshit. He did it in college and he was good. He can't pass block NFL ER's. That's what he can't do.

He also hasn't practiced at OG. He hasn't played there in several years. You can't just throw a guy in on the OL wherever you want in the middle of the season. That is usually reserved for injury decimated units.
Funny you mention the Lions.
mittenedman : 10/14/2024 1:32 pm : link
They absolutely destroyed that terrible Cowboys D. Destroyed it. In DAL, when the Cowboys were desperate. The Giants OL is better than it has been, but couldn't dream of opening the holes the Lions did. It was candy from a baby easy.

The Giants couldn't do a fucking thing against it.

There's no where left to hide now.

___________
Depends on how many games Thomas misses. For one or two games, Ezeudu. For more games and including the bye week, Eluemunor to LT and Neal to RT. Can’t throw Neal in somewhere he hasn’t played before in the NFL. If they don’t trust him to play RT, he might as well be inactive every week.

Sigh, that's very well put and very seemingly accurate.
