I keep thinking about the Two QB Sneaks one 4th and Inches

Jacobs #27 : 10/21/2024 11:35 am
vs. the Bengals.

I feel like the calls were truly bizarre and not given enough attention. I've been watching football 40 years and the only thing I've ever seen similar to that is the infamous Joe Judge sneaks which helped seal his fate here.

I mean there is just zero excuse for those play calls. 2nd and inches is essentially every offensive coordinators dream setup - it's as close to a free play as you well ever get in the NFL. And for a team that is struggling mightily to move the ball downfield it's a perfect setup for a free shot downfield.

And we got two of them in a short span and ran a QB sneak on both of them!!!! With a QB with major injury concerns.

WTF was Daboll thinking here???? It's one of 3 things:

1). Our QB is so awful there's no point taking a chance for a big play.....let's just sneak to get the first down in case we miss it we'll get two cracks at it.

2). He's too stupid to understand the value of a virtually free play here (also does not have to be a shot downfield....even a regular run at least gives you the chance at a bigger gain).

3). He's sending a message to whomever (Mara, Schoen, the press, the fans???) - my QB sucks and we can't move the ball downfield with him, all we can do is play 10 yard fiight all game.

I've been a fairly big Daboll supporter but these plays calls have made me question whether he really knows what the hell he's doing here or not. Or maybe he's just so fed up with it all and this was a despaired cry for help or he is secretly trying to lose games???

I really have no idea but I feel like something happened on these play calls that needs to be addressed and figure out what the hell is going on here.

I thought those were odd calls too, given that NYG

were on their side of the 50 yard line. At the time I was thinking "Cincy's defense is bad, but is Daboll really that confident that they can't make a stop here?" I can appreciate the NYG need to take some risks to win, but it seemed reckless to go for it there.
Your post is right on and I agree with you

but you titled the post as "4th and inches" which completely undermines your point and it's going to make a lot of people skip the thread.

Other than that, I feel the same way. The 2nd and inches QB sneaks, and Daboll's lame explanation afterward is the turning point where I lost faith in him. This is his third year and the offense is still a complete disaster. Maybe the worst in the NFL. His goal seems to be to try and string together a few first downs rather than any type of explosive plays and pushing downfield. If the QB is the sole issue, that doesn't excuse Daboll since he picks the starting QB and certainly has input into personnel decisions regarding who the QB is.

Jeez can't believe I missed that LOL....just points out that my brain can't even fathom sneaking the ball on 2nd and inches. I'll delete and repost. Thanks!
it aint complicated

Jones was solid the first year under this regime., HE was bad year 2 and got hurt. HE was still very much under contract heading into this season. HE got this year (through now and maybe a little longer) because he's making a lot of money and is probably the best QB on the team. You can nitpick or split hairs there if you want but who the hell cares.

Shit happens. It sucks. One can choose to lose their mind over it and question everything from the sun coming up to why they don't bench Jones now or sooner. They didn't. They probably won't until he fails miserably for 1-2-3 more games.

You can drum up 6 years this 6 years that. He had a solid first year and then fell apart and that fucked things up. I suspect we won't be seeing much more of Jones here. Even if NYG feel he's worth keeping at 40 million next season rather than eating 20-25 million, buying another vet stopgap (with the rookie) while saving that same amount, but I don't see the point in keeping him around after this year comes to a merciful conclusion. You're better off signing an old fuck QB who makes 10 million and drafting a kid.

ran back to back QB runs vs the Vikes from midfield.
At that Point Nabers was a non factor.
On second and five and then again on third and four he thought Jones was his best option.

He had a mediocre first year, which just happened to be a big step up from awful and injured.
