Yet another good draft for the Eagles?

Tony in Tampa : 4/29/2024 4:03 pm
I try not to focus on what other teams do, but with the Eagles this is like at least 3 drafts in a row now that have been stellar. We keep waiting for them to implode salary cap wise but they keep reloading.

Thank god their coach is an idiot and they collapsed at the end of the season. But it never seems to stop.

always get rated as having a great draft. Did it really pan out last year. Or even the year before. Previous drafts were great. Last year, they didn't light the world on fire.
When you’re good the drafts look better
BillT : 4/29/2024 4:09 pm : link
If only their first two picks hit, which is true for a lot of teams, it’s a great draft for them. They don’t have a lot of needs. You add a couple of good picks and you’re a winner.
On paper, yes, it looks like it

But that's not their issue.
the eagles drafts are always ranked good
Essex : 4/29/2024 4:18 pm : link
to great, but go back and see how many actually were great. Even their vaunted class of 2018 isnt so special. They have had a few hits (Hurts, Smith, and Dickerson) but a ton of misses as well.
How have

draft productive college players (ie the Georgia contingent) so that gets good draft grades but is Nakobe Dean, Jordan Davs, or Nolan Smith knocked anyone out of the park yet. Jalen Carter has flashed but he was also a top 15 pick and also had a terrible second half of the season. I would hold the phone on this great draft class.
Who knows....
knowledgetimmons : 4/29/2024 4:22 pm : link
Nakobe Dean was the 3rd round steal who should've been a walk off 1st rounder. Yet, they kept signing scrubs at MLB last offseason who were also "rich get richer" posts.

Nobody knows. They had a good draft, but it's never as good or as bad as you think. They took 3 OL and are hoping one hits.
They took 2 corners, and are hoping one hits. "drafting moneyball" because Howie knows the big brains have been slowly leaving their office.

Howie gets so much credit for being able to sign players, and he's playing a risky cap game. His drafting is average.

Like Winston Wolf said, lets not start sucking each others dicks quite yet.

Noone's concluded, just seems like things fell into place for them. Mitchell showed he looks like a really good player at the Senior Bowl. It is what it is, if we got him, people would be saying the same thing.

he also played at a MAC school and he was a zone cornerback. I have no idea if it will translate and neither does anyone else. Plus zone corners in my mind are not really a prized possession. Almost any offense can exploit a zone corner if given enough time. He has no man press experience and that is a key tool for a NFL CB
His drafts are as much hit as miss

And i think we're about to find out that a lot of these lauded defensive picks aren't going to live up to the billing.

But until the Giants are relevant again, it really doesn’t matter what they do; good or bad.
For all their great drafts,

the Eagles sucked at the end of last year. Maybe they haven't been so great. Jury is still out on the last few. I look forward to their continued downward slide.

Was it zone only? I wouldn't know, but I watched him during the week of the Senior Bowl, and he looked like the best corner man on man, and NFL analysts couldn't stop singing his praises for whatever it's worth.

They are about to enter the world of NFL football. We'll see.

Coaching or lack thereof.

Sirianni lost both coordinators and it showed once they started playing better teams.

Can we have some of our resident cap experts lead a conversation
Tom in NY : 4/29/2024 4:58 pm : link
on how the Eagles manage the salary cap so well?

It seems like it's more than the traditional "push money out" concept that has come back to burn other franchises.
I think that would be a good use of some time during the upcoming "slow period."

There's competing thoughts, perhaps the eagles don't really have the true answer yet. At the end of the day, it appears they are gambling in a calculated way that heavily prioritizes expected cap growth year over year AND the expected growth of Hurts.

Nakobe Dean to break the league like half of BBI were saying after that draft. Nolan Smith and Jordan Davis, too.

Smith and Dean may not start this year and their LB's aren't good.
Player selection has had mixed success

But no doubt....they keep adding picks.

Have 10 picks in 2025....is pretty amazing.

Do we know why they collapsed? Heard it was in Fighting

Good point on those two. Although Carter looked pretty good as a rookie last year.

It does seem, however, that Roseman manages the draft process very well in terms of short term and long term opportunities.

Agreed. People love their drafts but the last few years the players they drafted haven’t developed. This is why they are signing guys that are 35. If the guys they drafted were good replacements they would be moving on from the old guys.

Let’s see how they replace Kelce and Cox. Remember when the Giants OL fell off a cliff?
The thing is
Tony in Tampa : 4/29/2024 6:27 pm : link
The Giants are trying to establish a core and build some depth. It feels like Shoen and Daboll are building this house one brick at a time. Meanwhile no matter what we think of the Eagles draft, they are at minimum a good team. Their drafts are like replacing new parts to a high performance engine. Feels like you can’t catchup. Which sucks.

At least Dallas is paying the price for their spending or upcoming salaries.

This. That said the OG from Michigan is gonna piss us all off. Will prob play for them for 15 years.

Ok, how about that Nick Sagan offered him an opportunity to transfer to Alabama, but he declined. I mean, it's ok to admit that your rival might have gotten a really good player in the draft, it happens, so did we.
He’s been very good at replacing talent……
Simms11 : 4/29/2024 7:51 pm : link
They always have nice depth. The secondary has been their biggest nemesis IMO though.
It depends
WillVAB : 4/29/2024 8:51 pm : link
It was an uncharacteristically thin draft for them in the trenches. Small school edge in the 3rd and a Center late. Their OL/DL is in transition right now so if any of the guys they’re counting on to step in falter it could get ugly.

I’ve been following the draft and the NFL too long to play that game. We know nothing yet.
When a team has as many picks as Philly does.....
Fishmanjim57 : 4/30/2024 8:26 am : link
every single season, it's nearly impossible to have a bad Draft. Giants had 6 picks and did well. The Eagles had 16 picks, it's sickening watching the draft each year.

Obviously, we know nothing yet, then why talk about it at all?
I'd say it was. They needed CB's

SleepyOwl : 4/30/2024 9:46 am : link
Cornerback with their first two picks in an extremely bad cornerback class. Giants had a MUCH better draft. Nabers is going to smoke both those fools.
It seems that way
Matt in SGS : 4/30/2024 10:00 am : link
but if you get into the weeds, Howie does his best work in trades and smart free agent signings.

Remember when Andre Dillard was the next Jason Peters? As mentioned above, Nakobe Dean was a hand wringer pick, but they signed 5 million ILBs and just drafted Trotter Jr., who is basically the same player as Dean, but his dad played for the Eagles, so everyone goes crazy.

Jordan Davis is the next Fletcher Cox! The rich get richer! Davis looks like an overweight bust who is barely a 2 down player and got blown off the ball. Now, I'd kill to have their offensive line compared to the Giants, that's not saying much, but even last year, they showed cracks. Teams got a lot more pressure on Hurts than in 2022. Kelce is gone and Lane Johnson is a year older with a beat up body.

Look, they have set the standard in the NFC East for many years. The Giants have a way to go to catch up to them. But people act like Howie is Tex Schramm & Gil Brandt x 1000. That team had a historic collapse at the end of the season and a number of early lucky wins masked what they really were last year. An average team that was really an 8-9 team. Their coach lost the locker room and the fans last year too. They fired his coordinators and gave him another shot. But the moment they have a clunker, that fan base will not let go and you can see the wheels fly off, just like it did in December. And just for fun, I think within a year, after Millenial Barry Switzer is fired to cover Howie's ass, people will start to question Howie when that Hurts and Saquon's contracts look onerous. Hurts' deal will end up being worse than Daniel Jones'.

Right now, Philly is maybe 3rd in the NFC. They are behind SF and Detroit. Maybe even behind Dallas again. Let's see what happens when they face Green Bay in Brazil too. They lost key leaders in Kelce and Cox on a team that looks completely lost last year. And let's see how some of these guys act now that they got their money and got paid.

So yes, they have had drafts on paper that gets everyone excited, but the production hasn't matched the hype if you are paying attention.
